Situated in a log cabin in the heart of downtown, the Palmer Visitor Information Center and Museum serves the community of Palmer, Alaska, by providing visitor information for shopping, eating and accommodations, important historical sites, and exciting excursions.
Adjacent to the Visitor Information Center and Museum is a garden that showcases a wide selection of flowers and vegetables which, when seen during high summer, provides a glimpse into the growing capabilities under the midnight sun in Alaska. Originally designed to showcase the crops that were originally grown in Palmer in the 1930’s, the garden has expanded and now displays the best of what is and can be grown in South-central Alaska. In the garden, you will feast your eyes upon an array of colors and textures that can be seen nowhere else. Not to mention, it is the home of “Mat-Su Giants”, an outdoor sculptural installation of a giant cabbage and other vegetables that was specially designed using the measurements of the prizewinning vegetables in their categories. The installation allows visitors to view the Valley’s giant vegetables any time throughout the year, rain or shine or snow.
The Visitor Information Center and Museum grounds offer ample parking for RVs and trailers, a large lawn area ideal for picnicking, and a variety of historical farm equipment displays.
Our very knowledgeable staff can satisfy your curiosity about visitor services, accommodations, activities, and events, and are always more than happy to share a few local stories if you are so inclined. While you are there, guests can also enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee, tea, or cocoa, browse through the Visitor Information Center and Museum’s gift store, or find local maps and/or tour guides to help you create your own itinerary.
The Palmer Visitor Center Museum’s historical collections contain items that best depict the region’s exploration, settlement, agriculture, cultural and social development. Throughout the year, the Museum also presents temporary and traveling exhibits that allow visitors to explore local artwork and contemporary issues concerning the Mat-Su Valley and other regions of Alaska.
To experience Palmer on foot, first park your car in the ample lot at our convenient downtown location. Then, armed with information and inspiration, you can explore the Palmer Historic District, visit local shops, and enjoy our dynamic community. Allow us to assist you as you venture out into the greater Palmer area to visit the many local attractions and wilderness areas that make the Matanuska-Susitna Valley a distinctive and exciting place to be.

Winter Hours (October 1 - April 30)
Wednesday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
