Chief Dwayne Shelton was born in Wyoming and moved to Glennallen with his family when he was three years old. Upon graduation from Glennallen High School, he worked as a commercial welder. In 1997 he became a reserve Police Officer for the City of Palmer and served in the capacity until 1999 when he was hired as a full-time police officer with the Palmer Police Department.

During his tenure with the Palmer Police Department he has served as a narcotics investigator with the Alaska State Troopers Mat-Su Narcotics team, a Field Training Officer and a One on One Control Tactics Instructor.

In June 2012 Dwayne was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.  He was promoted to Commander in June of 2015. He was promoted to the rank of Chief of Police in December of 2019. 

Chief Shelton is a graduate of the Northwestern University, Center for Public Safety's School of Police Staff and Command.

Chief Shelton holds an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Wayland Baptist University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University.
